Endocrinology Specialists

Welcome to Endocrinology Specialists – a website dedicated to assisting people’s understanding of the importance of endocrinology as a medical field. Endocrinology is the specialty of medicine that deals with the problems, diseases and medical conditions of the endocrine system.  An endocrinologist is a doctor who specializes in the complex medical task of diagnosing and treating endocrinology, hormone disorders and other metabolic disorders.  In their practice, endocrinologists may rely on laboratory tests to assist them in determining the disorders of their patients. As such, many have backgrounds in chemistry and research. In addition, endocrinologists often evaluate a patient’s diet to determine if it has an impact on improving their condition.

 Treatment Process

The treatment process is as unique as each patient. Since endocrine disorders, such as diabetes, are often life-long a patient may have a very long and close relationship with their Endocrinologist.  The relationship a patient has with their endocrinologist may be a significant part of a treatment process. Many different organs and systems of the body are often involved in problems with the endocrine system. The endocrinologist has to determine whether an illness or condition is caused by a disease or just a difference between people.  This is done through the use of laboratory tests, tissue sampling, high resolution medical imaging, body scanning and blood analysis and bone density testing.

Some of the types of Endocrinologists

Clinical Endocrinologist. Clinical endocrinologists work in research on patients and on treating patients by understanding, diagnosing and treating endocrine and metabolic disorders, such as diabetes, diabetes management, thyroid disorders, osteoporosis, high blood pressure and obesity.

Neuroendocrinologist. Neuroendocrinologists specialize in the study, diagnosis and treatment of diseases involving both the endocrine and nervous systems, such as pituitary gland disorders, thyroid disorders and mood disorders.

Pediatric Endocrinologist .  Pediatric endocrinologists specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of children with diseases of the endocrine system, such as diabetes, sexual development and growth disorders

Reproductive Endocrinologist. Reproductive endocrinologists specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of people with reproductive disorders, including infertility, sexual dysfunction, menopause, hormonal disorders and pregnancy loss.

 Endocrinologist Medical Board Certification

Generally, endocrinologists are doctors that have been board certified by an affiliate of the American Board of Medical Specialties in the general specialties of Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, or Pediatrics and the subspecialties of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, Pediatric Endocrinology, or Reproductive Endocrinology/Infertility.  The voluntary board certification is a rigorous training process to meet very high standards in their ability to deliver patient care. The process requires that an endocrinologist successfully complete a bachelors degree, then take four years of medical education at approved institution, completed an internship or residency in their general specialty for three to five years, obtain their license to practice medicine, take and successfully pass a board exam in their general specialty.  To obtain their subspecialty certification, they must completed additional training or a fellowship in their subspecialty for another three years. Upon completion of those requirements, the doctor must take and pass subspecialty certification board exam. After that they can be certified in their subspecialty.  A doctor’s commitment to the board certification process does not end there; they have to keep current with the medical innovations in their area of specialty with continual education and other professional development.
